Chess matches can be rather lengthy. So it makes sense for the entire board to be moved out of the way during game breaks. The magnetic chess game I am presenting here can be set up without any of the pieces falling off or moving out of position.

Materials needed:

  • 32 chess pieces made of plaster or resin (80-125 mm tall, base diameter approx. 42 mm)
  • One wooden board 50 x 50 cm, 1 cm thick
  • One steel sheet 45 x 45 cm, 1 mm thick
  • Silver and black adhesive film, for example d-c-fix
  • 32 disc magnets type S-09-05-N
  • Hot glue gun
Note from the supermagnete team: Instead of hot glue, we recommend using the magnet glue UHU MAX REPAIR WS-ADH-01. The high temperature of the hot glue can demagnetise neodymium magnets. Please do not use superglue either, as it can adversely affect the coating of neodymium magnets. You can find more information on our FAQ page about glueing of magnets.

Assembly:

1. On the steel sheet, mark 64 squares, each measuring 5.5 x 5.5 cm.
2. Cut 32 silver and 32 black squares out of the film, each measuring 5 x 5 cm.
3. Stick the silver and black film squares onto the steel sheet in an alternating pattern.
4. Drill a hole 6 mm deep and with a diameter of 10 mm into the base of the chess pieces.
5. Add a little hot glue to the hole.
6. Place one disc magnet into each hole and press down firmly.
7. Let the glue set for at least four hours.
8. Cover the magnet with a piece of film.
9. Glue the steel sheet to the wooden board, using hot glue.
The game board can be leaned upright against a box
- and all pieces stay place!

The same game board can also be used for draughts. For that, you will need wooden discs with a diameter of 40 mm and a thickness of 15 mm, painted white and black. 24 additional disc magnets are also needed for the draughts game.
These game pieces also stick firmly to the game board.
